Bannon Turns on Elon: “He Promised a Trillion and Gave Us a Headache”
MAGA’s power duo fractures as Steve Bannon publicly doubts Elon Musk’s DOGE promises
It’s official: Steve Bannon is no longer buying what Elon Musk is selling.
In a fiery segment on his War Room podcast, Bannon sharply criticized Musk’s government watchdog project, DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), calling out the $1 trillion in projected “waste, fraud, and abuse” savings as nothing more than false hope.
“This is not a smear against DOGE,” Bannon said. “I love what DOGE is attempting to do, but the waste, fraud, and abuse is not going to be $1 trillion. It’s just not going to be.”
That’s a stunning reversal from one of Trumpworld’s most loyal attack dogs—especially considering Musk was tapped by Trump himself to lead the charge in cutting government waste. Bannon didn’t stop there. He demanded receipts, asking for a breakdown of how much DOGE has actually uncovered so far.
“Let’s drive a stake in the ground,” Bannon demanded. “Is it $25 billion? $50 billion? I don’t care. Just give us a real number.”
This is the first real fracture in the Musk-MAGA alliance since the tech billionaire became a right-wing media darling and de facto member of Trump’s shadow cabinet. It also exposes a growing rift in the GOP’s approach to government reform: flashy promises vs. actual accountability.
And Bannon’s not wrong to be skeptical. For all of Musk’s talk of “efficiency,” DOGE hasn’t produced a single transparent report or evidence-backed finding. Meanwhile, Trump is running the government like those fantasy numbers are already in the bank.
If this split deepens, it could pose a serious credibility problem for the Trump Administration. The promise of saving a trillion dollars was supposed to be the centerpiece of his fiscal pitch. Now one of his closest allies is calling BS.

Reminder Steve… you’re also a headache AND a pain in the butt.
It’s hard to tell who is the worst in MAGA.
Wow. It‘s only a distraction.
Musk, the scapegoat for the bill?
Ridiculous and insane.
