The Real Target of the OBBB’s AI Provisions? California.
How Trump’s budget doubles as a deregulatory missile aimed straight at the heart of state resistance—and why Silicon Valley should be terrified, not triumphant.
They say it’s just a budget bill.
They call it the One Big Beautiful Bill, smile wide, and pretend it’s all about “streamlining government.” But beneath the surface of this 940-page monstrosity lies something much more calculated—something you won’t hear from the cable news panels and Beltway analysts.
This bill wasn’t just built to enrich billionaires.
It was designed to kill state-level resistance to AI deregulation.
And the primary target? California.

Why California Had to Be Neutralized
If you're Peter Thiel, Donald Trump, or any of the AI industry’s billionaire backers, California is the last place you want writing the rules.
Because California was doing exactly that.
Here’s what the state was already enforcing or preparing:
Strict privacy laws under CCPA and CPRA
AI transparency mandates for hiring and surveillance algorithms
Human-in-the-loop review requirements for automated decision systems
Active proposals for AI liability, deepfake accountability, and predictive policing bans
And it wasn’t just paperwork. California’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, was making moves. Lawsuits. Task forces. Investigations. Real muscle.
All while Silicon Valley—the very engine of AI development—sits squarely under Sacramento’s jurisdiction.
That’s what scared them.
The Thiel Doctrine vs. California Governance
This is the real ideological clash.
Peter Thiel has made no secret of his worldview:
“AI is being held back by democracy.”
He believes that bold, transformative tech—like artificial intelligence—should not be slowed down by public safety rules, regulatory review, or god forbid, democratic accountability. And he’s not alone.
The Thiel Doctrine in a nutshell:
Innovation over oversight
Acceleration over deliberation
Profit over protection
California, by contrast, was laying the groundwork for something radical in a different direction: a democratic framework for AI governance. A model that could’ve spread across the country. A real check on Big Tech’s unchecked ambition.
So what did they do?
They Wrote California Out of the Future
The original version of the OBBB included a 10-year moratorium on state-level AI regulation—a move so extreme even most Senate Republicans backed off. After massive pressure, it was removed in a stunning 99–1 vote.
But don’t celebrate too soon.
Because what remains is just as dangerous:
A new version that ties AI oversight to federal infrastructure funds. States that want to pass meaningful AI laws now risk losing billions—particularly from broadband expansion and AI infrastructure grants.
That’s not policy. That’s extortion.
California lawmakers are now faced with a loaded question:
Do you want ethical AI protections—or your federal money?
And that’s the exact corner this bill was meant to paint them into.
This Is the Thiel Doctrine, Codified
The OBBB is a budget bill on paper. But in practice, it's a nationalized, centralized power grab that clears the runway for AI developers to launch unchallenged.
It strips away localized safety laws.
It punishes states that try to lead.
It rewards the worst instincts of tech monopolists.
It accelerates AI growth without oversight, constraint, or brakes.
And it’s wrapped in patriotic branding and sent to Trump’s desk by July 4.
Perfect timing.
⚠️ What Comes Next
This isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of a national legal fight—possibly a Supreme Court showdown. California will not go quietly, and other states may follow their lead.
But here’s what matters now:
📞 Call your representatives—especially if you live in a state trying to fight back. Demand they oppose the final version of the OBBB and stand up for state authority over AI regulation.
👉 U.S. Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224‑3121
Ask to be connected to your Senators and House member.
Tell the truth—this isn’t just about artificial intelligence. It’s about the erosion of democracy, federal blackmail, and the silencing of local voices.
Build resistance—state by state, community by community, before this becomes the permanent template for corporate rule.
They want AI to replace oversight.
They want billionaires to replace lawmakers.
They want ideology to replace rights.
But we see it. And we fight back.
