What began as peaceful protests against sweeping ICE raids has escalated into a full-blown constitutional standoff between California’s elected leadership and an administration reaching for unchecked military power.
“He’s pulling a military dragnet across Los Angeles… this is weakness masquerading as strength,” Newsom declared, accusing Trump of weaponizing federal troops against immigrant communities and state authority itself.
Trump invoked Title 10 of the U.S. Code to seize control of California’s National Guard and send in 700+ active-duty Marines—without Governor Newsom’s consent. In response, California has filed an emergency lawsuit challenging the deployment as an abuse of power.
So far, a federal judge has denied the state's request for a temporary restraining order—but a full hearing is scheduled for Thursday, June 12.
